The Committee adopted a Resolution (MEPC 27(23)), incorporating these provisions. Further work on assigning final and provisional categories and minimum carriage requirements will be carried • out after the next meeting of GESAMP Working Group, which was due to meet from 3 to 7 November 1986. The chemical industry was urged to provide information necessary for evaluating the hazard of its substances as soon as possible; the proposed interpretation of the provisional assessment of liquid substances, including a calculation method for assigning pollution categories and ship types for mixtures was approved and will be issued as an MEPC Circular; proposed interpretation of Annex II in respect of incinerator ships, together with their explanatory notes, were adopted and will be brought to attention at the next Consultative Meeting of the London Dumping Convention; provisional assessments for substances known to be carried out on offshore supply vessels were approved.
These markings will be in addition to the danger labels required by Chapter VII of SOLAS 78; GESAMP was invited to evaluate, as a matter of urgency, the pollution hazard of those substances in the IMDG Code which may be identified as marine pollutants under the established criteria and substances with similar properties but not yet covered by the provisions of the IMDG Code, especially pesticides; an amendment to the IMDG Code was developed in the form of a draft interim section 23 which covers the identification of Annex II category A substances and black tainters as marine pollutants.
