Severe medical problems afﬂicted his oldest child, at the same time that increasing tensions were straining his marriage and ultimately resulted in a separation from his wife. A traumatic period in the composer’s life ensued, resulting in artistic paralysis. His professional pressures mounted, as his stack of unﬁnished commissions expanded. The pianist Hilde Somer pleaded desperately with him to complete his Second Piano Concerto, which she had commissioned years earlier, and for which she had accepted a 1969 engagement.
That same year, he was invited to visit the United States as a guest of the government. This was the ﬁrst time that Ginastera had traveled abroad for an extended period of time since his Guggenheim years. The result was equally stimulating. While visiting the United States, he again attended a meeting of the MENC, as well as spending time at Northwestern University, Indiana University, UCLA, and the University of California at Berkeley. Contact with these institutions strongly affected his pedagogical conception.
