261-72). When he prints such material he treats it poetically. By contrast, he includes a transcription and an interlinear translation of the opening passage of his version of the origin legend and sets that up as prose, filling each line from margin to margin with no attempt to identify discrete poetic units (pp. 258-61). Somehow he failed to replicate the innately poetic quality of narrative in a final printed text the way he could replicate the poetic quality of a prayer or a song on the printed page.

The Navajos have always had a dynamic oral tradition, and it thrives to this day. But in preparing his translation Matthews did not succeed in replicating a poetic idiom appropriate to that tradition. He wrote up his English version in fairly ordinary, discursive prose intended to transmit the story's content and to convey information about Navajo beliefs. So his text reflects little of the art of preliterate storytelling in any native language. How he acquired his material never became entirely clear to me, and limited to the evidence presently available we may never know exactly what procedure he used in assembling his text.

So after I retuned I began a tentative investigation by reading printed material entirely new to me. Since its inception well over a century and a half ago, for example, the Bureau of American Ethnology had fostered a great deal of direct research among Indian tribes all over North America and has published numerous transcriptions of prayers, songs, and narratives in its numbered bulletins and reports. Many are straightforward literal translations of what might actually have been poetry of a sort.
