Indeed, a closer inspection of At the Hour of Death reveals that it owes far more to Barrett for inspiration than it does to Moody, although in several key respects it resembles the work of both.

Arguably, however, the most significant early testing and development of Moody’s initial findings was to appear shortly after Ring’s work. Entitled Recollections of Death and appearing in 1982, it was written by another physician, Michael Sabom, who, together with colleague Sarah Kreutziger, based extensive research on a survey of the experiences of 100 respondents. In the first chapter of this work Sabom began by telling the story of how he became involved in the study of NDEs. Attending a Methodist church in 1976 during his first year of cardiology at the University of Florida, he had been intrigued by a Sunday School presentation of Moody’s Life After Life.

This is a complex cluster of questions. To begin with, it is clear that Moody’s work was not aimed at an academic audience, and this may itself give clues as to its broad, popular appeal.
